Heritage group slams ‘Smithfield Quarter’ plan

Clem Cecil, director of Save Britain’s Heritage has accused developers of playing “fast and loose” with the history of Smithfield market, after the plans were revealed for the disused western end of London’s famous wholesale meat market.

The £160m scheme, backed by Henderson Global Investors, proposes to include 170,000 square feet of office space, plus 21 two-story shops and restaurants and an internal piazza, which conservationists say will essentially mean demolishing existing unlisted Victorian buildings.
